Julian Zelazny
Canadian photographer Julian Zelazny credits his deep love of nature to his father’s influence. As a child in Québec he and his father would head north into timber country to fish for native speckled trout. The experience of being out in the bush, catching fish and witnessing a diversity of wildlife left a lasting impression.
Fresh out of university, Julian volunteered with an aid organization and was posted to a rural secondary school in Kenya to teach science. Kenya quickly got into his blood and he developed a fascination with Kenyan landscapes and wildlife. Today he keeps in touch with friends he met while teaching there and returns on occasion to visit and to go on safari to capture images of African wildlife.
Julian spent most of his career in the environmental field with wildlife and conservation organizations. The focus of his work was the conservation of North American ecosystems and the species that inhabit them. Through his work he developed a deep appreciation for North American landscapes and species, which is reflected in much of his Canadian wildlife work. In addition to photography, Julian is an avid homebrewer and winemaker. He lives with his wife in Surrey, BC.
